Battle Of Ballinamuck Commemorations To Take Place In The Midlands

Events will take place from the 7th to the 10th September.

The Battle of Ballinamuck, which took place in 1798, will be commemorated in the midlands this September.

Events will take place around the village of Ballinamuck, in Longford,  from the 7th to the 10th September.

Throughout the days you can expect live music from Johnny Brady, Rhythm & Sticks, Cronin and more.

Some of the other activities include battle re-enactments, food stalls,  a blacksmith forge exhibition, poetry & storytelling and dance workshops.

All events are based at the 98 Memorial Hall or surrounding areas.

The 225th commemoration was launched in the '98' Bar on Saturday the 12th August.

Reenactors travelled from Meath, Kildare, Clare and Wexford, with local pikemen and women and were welcomed by chairperson Mark Cunningham.

There was entertainment from Paul Redmond, from the musical The Promise 'Men of Erin' and trad band The Howth Heads.

The battle was the last major engagement of the 1798 rebellion.

Since then, people in Ballinamuck have a great respect for the French and have been Twinned with Essert in France since 1997.
