Mountmellick has suffered flooding across the town over the past week.
A flood defence system for a Laois town is years away and is still pending approval.
An Coimisiun Pleanala is currently considering details of the proposed scheme for Mountmellick, with the OPW also running a public consulation on its completed preliminary design.
It comes as the town has been hit by more flood damage this week with the arrival of Storm Claudia.
An annual drainage maintenance scheme is in place as an interim measure.
