Approval Granted For €100m Student Accommodation Development In Westmeath

The development will include a total of 168 housing units and a creche.

A €100 million housing and student accommodation development in Westmeath has got the go-ahead.

Plans had been lodged with An Bord Pleanála in January for 60 houses and 62 apartments, along 46 student apartments and a creche on a 3.9 hectare site Lissywoollen, Athlone, near the Techonological University of the Shannon.

Avenir Homes Limited, owned by Longford-based developer and former Athlone IT student Mark Cunningham, is behind the project.

An Bord Pleanála has today granted permission for The Green Quarter development, which is expected to create over 200 construction jobs.

Due to the scale of the project, it's categorised as a 'strategic housing development' and was fast-tracked to the national planning body, rather than being dealt with solely by Westmeath County Council's planning department.

However, local councillors did meet to review and discuss the proposals in recent months.
