Arming Gardaí Isn't The Answer - GRA

The Tanaíste has said he'd back a fully armed police force in the country.

Rank and file Gardai believe they should remain unarmed.

However, the Garda Representative Association think more non-lethal force methods should be considered - such as tasers.

It follows remarks from the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar at the weekend, where he said he would back a fully armed police force.

Westmeath Rep for the GRA Conor Staunton doesn't think that fire arms for every officer is the answer:

The Justice Minister insists there are no plans to arm rank and file Gardai.

However, Heather Humphreys says the government would consider arming more members of the force if the Garda Commissioner requested it.

There has been criticism from the opposition to remarks made by Leo Varadkar over the weekend, who said he would support fully arming the force.
