Campaining Gets Underway For 2020 General Election

A Laois TD feels the timing may pose a difficulty.

The Taoiseach says he knows more needs to be done by the government on housing and health.

It comes as the Dáil was dissolved this afternoon and a general election called for Saturday, February 8th - the first time voting will take place on a Saturday since 1918.

Fine Gael's campaign slogan is "A Future For All", while Fianna Fáil is sticking with its 2016 slogan - "An Ireland For All".

Laois TD Séan Fleming feels the timing may pose a difficulty for candidates and their canvassing teams:

Thousands of people who registered to vote in the last year will need to apply to the supplementary register if they want to have their say in the election.

It's been confirmed the current draft register won't be activated in time for February 8th.

Those wishing to vote will need to lodge the correct form with their local authority by next Wednesday.
