Midlands Chimney Fires Decline

25 people lost their lives in fires across the country last year, with one each in Laois and Westmeath.

Chimneys remain a top cause of fire in homes across Ireland. 

There's been a slight decline in the number of chimney fires in the midlands, at 192, down from 202 based on new figures from the Department of Housing.

25 people died in fires last year, with one each in Laois and Westmeath with 21 of those 25 deaths involving people aged 55 or over.

Almost 20 thousand incidents were attended by fire brigades across the country.
