The border trail network across the region will cover 70km in total.
Construction has begun on new walking and cycling trails in Longford and Westmeath.
The €5.7 million investment, led by Fáilte Ireland and co-funded by the Government and EU Just Transition Fund, marks the first phase of the Midlands Trails Network.
Developed in partnership with Bord na Móna, the project will deliver 16km of accessible trails - 10km in Longford and 6km in Westmeath.
When completed, the broader trail network, will total up to 70km across the region.
Minister and Longford Westmeath TD Peter Burke and Minister Darragh O’Brien TD officially launched the initiative saying it's a major step in promoting tourism, sustainability and economic revitalisation in the region.
