€4.5m In Grants Available For Improving Housing For Older And Disabled People

The allocation for the midlands this year is €400,000 more than last year.

€4.5 million is going towards improving the homes of older people and those with disabilities in the midlands.

This year's Housing Adaptation Grant funding has increased by over €400,000 on last year.

It includes grants of up to 30,000 euro to assist disabled people in carrying out necessary works and grants of up to 8,000 to assist older people.

Westmeath County Council is receiving 1.6 million euro this year, 1.5 is going to Offaly, and 1.4 to Laois.

Announcing this year's allocation, Junior Minister for Housing and Longford-Westmeath Fine Gael TD, Peter Burke said;

“These grants have a huge impact on the quality of life of the many beneficiaries...and play a vitally important role in helping disabled people and people who are reaching an age in life when they are less mobile, to continue to live independently in their own homes.

“As Minister of State with responsibility for housing for older people and disabled people, I am fully committed to assisting individuals...to stay in their own homes and within their own communities for as long as   possible and these allocations today will facilitate this goal for many”. 

The fund announced today, which supports home adaptations for older people, disabled people and those with mobility issues, provides 80% Exchequer funding through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, with the remaining 20% in funding coming from the relevant local authority.
