Midlands and Portlaoise Prisons are well over capacity.
Prisoners may soon be electronically tagged in a bid to tackle overcrowding.
The Government's planning to give tags to appropriate inmates before the end of the year.
Yesterday, 71 prisoners in the Midlands and Portlaoise Prisons were sleeping on floors because of overcrowding.
Both facilities are operating well over capacity with Portlaoise at 124%, and Midlands Prison at 115%.
The tags will also be used for people who are given bail on strict conditions.
