'Turn your appliances off at night' is the message for this year's Fire Safety Week.

Fire officers around the country are urging people to only use their dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers while they're awake.

Charging your phone during the day is also one of the key messages of Fire Safety Week, which kicks off today.

Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Westmeath County Council, Pat Hunt, says you can avail of off-peak times set by smart meters and still be safe:
