There's growing confidence a solution to the MIDOC out-of-hour GP services in the midlands will be found.
The future of the service has been up in the air since the group ceased trading last year.
During a monthly meeting of Laois County Council, Cathaoirleach Thomasina Connell expressed her confidence in the HSE that a permanent solution to the MIDOC service can be found.
However, she says it's unacceptable such a vital system was allowed to lapse, and is calling on the Health Service to provide an explanation.
Her Fine Gael colleague, Councillor Aisling Moran, suggested adopting an approach used in other countries, where clinical pharmacists and nurses can write prescriptions for patients.
She believes the move would alleviate pressure on GPs, and busy emergency departments.
Laois County Council will write to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, seeking an update on out-of-hour services in the midlands.
