HIQA Report Finds Midlands Care Centre Non Compliant In Several Areas

A HIQA report says Ferbane Care Centre breached regulations over unsanctioned layout changes.

An Offaly nursing home has been cited by the healthcare watchdog over a number of issues.

A new report from HIQA says Ferbane Care Centre failed in regulation areas around unsanctioned changes to its layout, governance and management, and the standards of its premises.

While the nursing home did fail in three areas, it was found compliant, or substantially compliant on ten other regulations it was inspected on over a two day period in August.

Residents told inspectors that Ferbane Care Centre was a lovely place to live, with staff described as being kind and attentive.

However, management was highlighted for failing to communicate effectively with its staff, meaning a compliance plan from a previous inspection failed to be successfully implemented.

In one instance, staff told inspectors a bathroom had not being functioning for over a year but were unaware of plans to upgrade the room or when the upgrades were due to take place.

The facility was found non-compliant for the standards of its premises.

Communal spaces were not laid out in a homely way, and did not promote or encourage social interaction. 

There were damaged doors, walls, and floor coverings. 

And loose electrical sockets, missing call bells, and call bells with broken or frayed cords.

Ferbane Care Centre was also cited for failing to notify the Chief Inspector of changes to the footprint of the centre, and changes to the use of rooms.

This issue has since been addressed while management is committing to improve communication with staff, and the premises is being cleaned and redecorated.
