Jozef Puska's Wife Receives 20 Month Sentence

Mr Puska's wife, two brothers and their wives have been sentenced in court in Dublin today.

Jozef Puska’s wife, Lucia Istokova was jailed for 20 months for withholding information about his whereabouts and movements on the night of the murder.

She, like his brothers, Marek and Lubomir, also failed to reveal that he had made certain admissions to them when he returned home that night with visible injuries.

Marek and Lubomir were each jailed for 2.5 years.

Lubomir’s wife, Viera Gazoiva, got two years; while Marek’s wife, Jozefina Grundzova  was jailed for 21 months for burning the blood-soaked clothes worn by Jozef Puska.

In constructing the sentences, Ms J Caroline Biggs noted that their actions didn’t hinder the investigation a great deal – Jozef Puska was caught and prosecuted.

She said sentencing is not an act of vengeance.

She said her duty was was to impose sentences that were fair, just, and proportionate to each person’s culpability and circumstances, not to reflect public outrage or the unimaginable pain of the Murphy family.

In his victim impact statement, Ashling Murphy’s father, Ray, condemned those before the court for protecting his daughter’s killer, instead of doing the right thing.

Her sister, Amy, also condemned their actions, saying they had shown no honesty, accountability or remorse.
