Andy Cash from Portlaoise was diagnosed with a rare immune disorder at just three weeks old.

A Laois family is celebrating after their nine year old son made a "life changing" recovery from a rare life-threatening condition.

Andy Cash, from Portlaoise, was diagnosed with Adenosine deaminase deficient severe combined immunodeficiency when he was three weeks old.

Children with the condition have no immune system.

The Irish Independent is reporting 62 children, including Andy, received a new form of gene therapy where the patient's cells are removed, modified in a lab, and returned to their body.

95% of the children involved were cured, with those who didn't respond to treatment getting bone marrow transplants.

Now nine years old, Andy is a keen boxer and his family say they are "incredibly grateful" for his recovery.
