LEADER is a community-led approach to local developments.
A local group dedicated to providing the best amenities to people with additional needs has become the latest recipient of LEADER support through Laois Partnership Company, with funding secured for improvement works at a popular walking site near Portlaoise and Ballyroan.
Laois Friends, who oversee the Rockview Walkways and Sensory Garden, will use the funding to build a new fully accessible car park, which will ensure universal access to one of Ireland’s few community woodlands designed for people with additional needs. T
With funding in 2010, the group developed the Rockview Walkways and Sensory Garden on 20 acres of native woodland near Ballyroan and Portlaoise. The 2km walking tracks attract users from across Laois, including C-Ability, Muiriosa Foundation, Special Olympics Laois, active retirement groups, local schools, and the wider community.
Grant support of €43,665.72 has been sought, with €14,555.24 match funding from Laois Friends and bridging finance through Clann Credo, making a total project cost of €58,220.96.
Laois Friends committee say “LEADER support has been central to the success of Laois Friends and the Rockview Walkways project. We would encourage all local voluntary groups to engage with Laois Partnership Company to see how LEADER support can bring their vision into reality.”
The 2023-2027 Programme, co-funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, and the European Union, provides financial grants to groups keen to improve their community or budding entrepreneurs who are setting up a business.
