No results came from the first day of counting in Westmeath.
The count centre in Moate saw the ballots delivered at 6:30pm, with counting beginning shortly before 7pm.
Tallies show that Independent candidate Kevin "Boxer" Moran is likely to make a return to the council. The former TD previously held a seat for 17 years.
Councillor Aengus O' Rourke also seems to be polling well according to the tallies.
He says he is confident of Fianna Fáil success in the county:

There was some disappointment from the tallies for female candidates in Westmeath.
Fianna Fáil rep Aoife Davitt was the highest of the women in Westmeath according to the tallies. She's running in the Mullingar Kinnegad district.

Sinn Fein candidate Maureen Pigott shared in the disappointment for female candidates in the county.
