Massive Midlands Development Sees Planning Permission Refused

The developer can appeal the decision within the next four weeks.

Plans for a massive residential and commercial development in the midlands have been refused.

Cayenne Holdings had been seeking planning permission for 204 apartments and 20 commercial and retail units on lands between Patrick Street and Kilbride Street in Tullamore.

Offaly County Council refused the development's application on the grounds of six conditions.

It says the Distillery Yard and D-E Williams House project would endanger public safety because of the additional traffic it would generate onto Offaly Street which has limited road space.

The local authority claims the proposed development would seriously injure the historic character and visual amenities of Tullamore Town due to its 13-storey scale, which would be visually obtrusive to the area's skyline.

Also included in the conditions for refusal are concerns with access by fire services, the residential density of the project and off-road parking facilities.

The developer has been given a timeframe of four weeks to appeal the planning official's decision to An Bord Pleanala, if it wishes to do so.
