Midlands Councils Boost Environmental Enforcement Performance

Local authorities have seen improvements of 66% over the past three years.

Local authorities in the midlands have improved their environmental enforcement performance by 66% over the past three years.

A new report from the Environmental Protection Agency shows the scale of inspections, prosecutions, and enforcement actions has grown nationwide.

Westmeath achieved the highest score in the region based on the number of national enforcement priorities that met the EPA's required standard, a 54% improvement year on year.

Laois jumped by 25%, while Offaly is placed sixth from bottom in the national table, despite an 8% improvement in the past year.

Dr Tom Ryan, Director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Enforcement, says the report outlines how councils are being assessed:
