The figure has dropped the most in Westmeath.
There has been a significant drop in housing commencements in the Midlands.
There's been a 96% drop in the number of new homes being built in the region when compared to the same period last year.
The bulk of the decrease comes in Westmeath where commencement notices have been lodged for 5 new homes in December 2025, compared to 421 in 2024.
The figure is 8 in Laois, down from 93, and in Offaly there were 9 notices for new houses compared to 215 in 2024.
Justin Molloy, the Construction Industry Federation's Director for the Western/Midlands Region says a clearer layout is needed:
