Midlands Homelessness Drops Amid Record National Figures

There are 422 new people reporting as homeless across the country.

Homelessness in the midlands has declined slightly in the last month.

The Department of Housing's latest figures show there were 245 people in the region who accessed emergency accommodation in January.

Coming down from 260 in December, January's figure of 245 is a drop of 5.8% in the number of people reporting as homeless in Laois, Offaly and Westmeath.

There were however 71 children registered as homeless last month, four more than the month previous.

Westmeath saw the majority of the decline in adults accessing emergency accomodation down from 85 in December, to 76 in January.

The figure in Offaly is 63, and 35 in Laois.

60% of the adults are men, while 40% are women.

Nationally, a record 15,286 people were registered as Homesless in January, a significant increase from December's total of 14,864.
