Midlands Homelessness Figures Fall For Second Consecutive Month

121 adults were without permanent accommodation last month.

The number of homeless people in the midlands has dropped slightly, for the second month in a row.

121 adults accessed emergency accommodation in February, one less than the month previous.

50 of those were in Westmeath, 48 were in Offaly, and 23 in Laois.

69 children were also without permanent accommodation last month, according to figures from the Department of Housing.

The number of homeless people in emergency accommodation has increased by almost 24 per cent in a year. 

Around the country, 11,742 people, including 3,373 children, were homeless in February.

It’s an increase of almost 24 per cent on the same month for last year.

The data, for the week of February 20th-26th, show there were 8,369 adults in emergency accommodation, an increase of 23 per cent on the figure for February last year. 

In Dublin, there are 8,588 people, including 2,576 children, living in homelessness.

Meanwhile this month's figures, when compared to January, remain relatively unchanged.

Executive Director of the Simon Community, Wayne Stanley, says while the drop is welcome, he expects the figures to rise in the coming weeks with the lifting of the eviction ban:
