CSO figures show the seasonally adjusted total nationally stood at 172,200 in September.
However, the unadjusted figure was one point two per cent higher than the same month last year.
Figures in the midlands saw an overall decrease of 1.27%.
Elsewhere, Dublin recorded the biggest annual percentage increase, rising by 5.4%, with Longford on 3.5% - the largest decreases were in Monaghan and Kerry.
