Those studying in Athlone IT and IT Carlow are among those involved.
College students in the Midlands are volunteering to keep a frontline industry staffed as demand on the service increases.
Students from Athlone IT and IT Carlow are part of the initiative, in which every third level institution with a pharmacy technician course is helping to fill jobs that are being strained.
It includes work delivering prescriptions to and from pharmacies, working in the shop itself or in dispensaries.
IT Carlow is also using its facilities to create hand sanitiser and face shields while the campus remains closed.
