Midlands and Portlaoise prisons are at 110% and 106% respectively - holding a combined total of over 1,200 prisoners.

The Midlands Prisons is catering to almost 90 more people than it has the space for.

Across Ireland, there are only three prisons which are under capacity, each of which is at over 90%.

At over 5 thousand prisoners nationally, Irish prisons are at 111% capacity.
