The nationwide alert is being extended.

The midlands is set stay under a low temperature warning until midday tomorrow.

A nationwide status yellow warning has been extended, while snow continues to fall in many other parts of the country.

Mayo, Galway, Kerry, Limerick and north Cork are among the areas worst affected by heavy snowfall overnight.

Those counties remain under an Orange warning this morning.

Alan O’Reilly, from Carlow Weather, says some parts were surprised when the snow flurries began:
