Most of the counties roads are built on peat foundations.

Offaly County Council is to present the findings of a pilot project on improving road longevity in the county in the coming weeks.

Over half of the local road network is built on peat foundations, meaning that roads only last 3 years at most, before needing to undergo works.

The engineering department is carrying out an investigation to create a long term foundation for the roads.

Independent Councillor for Birr John Leahy says the heavy vehicles on these roads is causing the most concern:
