The Midlands Prison was at 110%capacity yesterday, with nearly 100 more inmates than there are beds available.
While Portlaoise Prison was also overcrowded, 105% capacity.
Nearly 5,000 inmates are in cells in facilities nationwide with the ability to hold around 4,000.
