Proposed Offaly Secondary School Could Accommodate 1,300 Students

The plans would see the existing school replaced with a new building.

Plans for a new secondary school in the midlands could see it accommodate up to 1,300 students.

The Board of Management at Coláiste Íosagáin in Portarlington is seeking planning permission for a new two and three-storey post-primary school.

The new development would allow the school to accommodate an additional 160 students, increasing from 1,140 to 1,300.

The building would replace the existing school, and the plans include the demolition of the current premises, as well as a number of temporary buildings.

As the proposed development would be built on the existing GAA pitch, it also includes plans to construct a new pitch on the site.

Overall, the plans would see the new school feature 48 general classrooms, 24 specialist teaching rooms and four special needs classrooms, as well as a range of other facilities, including a library and P.E hall.

It's expected the contract for development of the new project would take more than two years.

A decision from Offaly County Council is due by the 22nd of September.
