Significant Decrease In Crime In Westmeath So Far In 2021

Gardaí have also issued an update on the number of covid fines handed out.

Gardaí in Westmeath have given a largely positive update on policing in the county.

Property crime and thefts are down across the board while there's been a substantial increase in drug detection.

The joint policing committee this morning was informed of a 28% drop in vandalism and property crime, a 22% decrease in theft from vehicles and a 45% decline in robbery's from shops.

That's compared to the first four months of 2020.

However, there has been an increase in the number of vehicles being stolen from 10 to 12 in the same time frame.

Analysis also shows a rise in the number of drug detections in the Athlone and Mullingar districts.

That figure has jumped from 15 to 26 in the year to April, a 73% rise.

In relation to covid restrictions, a total of 203 fines have been handed out, 173 of them for travel beyond the 5km limit while 22 people were given fixed penalty notices for attending a party.
