'Stand With Badgers' Appeals Midlands Housing Development

The group are concerned the project will lead to the death of the Cornamaddy Badger.

Plans for a controversial housing development in the midlands have been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Westmeath County Council initially granted planning permission to Marina Quarter Limited for the provision of 70 new homes in Cornamaddy, Athlone, in October.

That was subject to 22 conditions, one of which includes ensuring a Badger Mitigation Strategy is implemented - part of that plan includes the provision of an artificial sett.

However, the Stand With Badgers group, one of appellants behind the submisson to ABP, said if the animals lose their natural sett, it will lead to the death of the Cornamaddy Badgers.

A decision from An Bord Pleanála is due by April 5th.
