State Urged To Progress Plans For Major Cycleway

The route will connect Athlone to Galway.

The State is being urged to progress plans for a major new cycleway in Westmeath.

The 205km project will span from Athlone to Galway, and will travel through towns and villages including Shannonbridge, Ballinasloe and Portumna.

The contract with the engineering company, which was appointed in 2019, was suspended last year as the previously agreed price was said to no longer be financially viable.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan says the cycleway needs to be delivered:

The Government is unable to clarify when a long-awaited cycleway in Westmeath will be completed.

The 205km route between Athlone and Galway is to be split into two sections, with Westmeath County Council set to deliver 83km of the project from Athlone to Portumna, while Galway County Council will handle the remaining 114km.

Contractors for both of those phases are due to be appointed in the final quarter of this year.

However, Junior Minister, Ossian Smyth, says he can't provide a development timeline:
