Third Consecutive Increase In Midlands Homelessness

Nearly 200 people were without permanent accommodation in the region last month.

There's been an increase in the number of people in homelessness in the midlands.

197 people were without permanent accommodation in the region in July, according to new figures from the Department of Housing.

The increase represents the third straight in the midlands, with successive jumps in May and June.

142 adults accessed emergency accommodation in the region last month - 72 of those were in Westmeath, while the figure in Offaly was 46, and 24 in Laois.

55 children were also registered as homeless in July.

Nationally, 14,429 people were without permanent accommodation last month - that's the highest figure on record.

While nearly 4,500 children were registered as homeless in that time frame.

The report also shows there's been a 12% increase in homelessness in the 12 months since July 2023.

The figures released by the Department of Housing do not include refugees, asylum seekers, women in refuge centres or rough sleepers.
