It's one of six expansions to higher education facilities in the country.
A major extension to TUS has been given the green light.
A new science, technology, engineering and mathematics building is on it's way to the Athlone campus, following the signing of contracts which signals the start of construction.
The 6,000 metre squared facility will consist of new science laboratories, lecture theatres and classrooms, and will create capacity for 1,300 additional students.
It's one of six major upgrades to higher education facilities in the country, which cost the state over €250 million.
Longford Westmeath TD Peter Burke says:
“We have seen since TUS was officially declared a Technological University by Minister Simon Harris last year that the TU has gone from strength to strength. We are lucky to have such a world class facility on our doorstep, offering globally recognised and gold standard higher education to our student population, young and old”.
