91 students could be accommodated in the development.
Plans for new student accommodation in Westmeath have been given the green light.
26 new apartments are due to be constructed in Athlone, which would accommodate as many as 91 students.
The development will be located just 250 metres way from the Technology University of the Shannon, which the planning report says is suffering with a shortage of accommodation.
The project will see the old 'Genesis' Nightclub demolished, to make way for five apartment blocks.
Westmeath County Council granted planning permission subject to 17 conditions.
