Athlone Town's Recent Goalscoring Struggles Continue

That's now two games in succession without a goal.

Athlone Town's recent struggles in front of goal continued in their 1-0 defeat to Treaty United at Markets Fields on Friday night. 

That's almost 200 minutes of football without a goal and is a stark contrast to their opening five games where the attacking quartet of Doona, Wixted Byrne and Meaney could do no wrong. 

It's not for a lack of creating chances, they had a bucket load against Cabinteely and a few openings last night in Limerick but were unable to convert. 

Defensively the team remain very solid as the back to back single goal defeats will atest to but the forwards must regain their finishing touch to remain in the automatic promotion hunt. 

A Jack Lynch goal was the difference between the sides and the surprised packages of the SSE Airtricity League First Division are now level on points with Athlone in third. 

Galway's very late winner against Wexford plus their awarding of a cancelled game against Cabinteely has breathe new live into their challenge and the Tribesmen are now only one point off both Athlone and Treaty. 

Shelbourne could move into top spot ahead of UCD and open up a five point gap to the midlanders with victory at home to Cobh Ramblers this evening. 

Next up for Adrian Carberry's side are back to back home games with Cobh Ramblers and UCD.

UCD 0-0 Cork City

Bray 3-0 Cabinteely

Galway 1-0 Wexford
