Rory McIlroy played an excellent bogey free round in pursuit of his first major in over ten years.
Rory McIlroy is in a share of the lead after day one of the US Open at Pinehurst.
The world number three carded a bogey-free 65 to finish on five-under-par last night.
He's at the top of the leaderboard alongside Patrick Cantlay.
Seamus Power is one-over, while Shane Lowry and Tom McKibbin are both four-over-par heading into day two.
Lowry's round of six bogeys and two birdies will need to be improved upon today if he's to make the cut.
The Clara golfer returns to the course just after 1pm, McIlroy is back out just before 12.30pm, while McKibbin and Power are later starters.
They take to the course at 5.31pm and 5.41pm, respectively.
McIlroy says he's pleased with his controlled start to the tournament.
Tiger Woods let a bright start slip as he finished his opening round at the US Open golf on 4-over-par.
The three-time champion had warned of a "war of attrition" before the major got underway at Pinehurst due to the difficulty of the putting greens.
He says he came close to playing the conditions well:
