Hewitt oversaw a strong campaign last season but has struggled for results this year.
Athlone Town Women find themselves on the hunt for a new manager this morning.
Tommy Hewitt stepped down last night, with the Midlands club seventh in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division.
Hewitt led Athlone to victory in this year's President's Cup after a penalty shoot out win over Shelbourne.
However it was Shels that proved to be Hewitt's last game over Town.
The midlanders were well beaten, 4-1 at home to the Dublin side, in the first round of the All-Island Cup last time out.
Last season, Athlone managed second place in the league last season, and they were also beaten in the Women's FAI Cup final.
The club said they "regretfully" accepted Hewitt's resignation.
