Westmeath Fall At Final Hurdle In Wexford

The Lake County footballers surrendered their ticket for promotion in the last moments.

Westmeath suffered last minute heartbreak in the National Football League yesterday.

The Lake County were on the cusp of securing their place in Division Two until a final minute goal from Sean Ryan meant Wexford secured promotion and Westmeath face another season in the third tier.

Mark McHugh's side were eight points clear shortly before the hour mark before Wexford started their comeback.

It finished 2-16 to 1-18.

McHugh says he's finding the loss hard to process:

Elsewhere, Laois halted Down's winning run in Division Three with an impressive 2-22 to 24 point win in Newry.

The result ensured Laois avoided the slim prospect of relegation.

Offaly were already relegated from Division Two and completed their league campaign with a 10 point loss at home to Meath.

The final score was 0-18 to 2-22.
