Eviction Ban Motion To Be Debated This Evening

Sinn Féin have called for the decision to end the eviction ban to be reversed.

The government is preparing to go head-to-head with opposition parties this evening over its decision to end the eviction ban.

A Sinn Féin motion - calling for the ban to be reintroduced - will be debated in the Dáil later, and voted on tomorrow.

However, the government is to sign-off on its own counter-motion this morning.

The Regional Group of seven independent TDs says its position will depend on how the government responds to eight proposals its putting forward to alleviate the housing crisis.

Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten says they're practical proposals to the "political posturing" in the Dáil:

The level of urgency from people receiving termination notices is not being reflected by the level of action from the government.

Sinn Féin Deputy Sorca Clarke is making the comments, ahead of a debate in the Dáil this evening, calling for the eviction ban to be reintroduced.

The Longford Westmeath TD says people have nowhere else to go:

Fine Gael Kildare North TD Bernard Durkan admits more houses are needed, but says extending the eviction ban won't solve the problem.

The Government is expected to finalise a counter-motion to a Sinn Féin proposal on extending the eviction ban today.

The moratorium is due to come to an end on March 31st.

The Regional Group of Independents has put forward eight "asks" to combat the housing crisis.

Verona Murphy - who is part of the Independent Group - says if the proposals are not heard, she won't support the motion:
