Works On Athlone Main Drainage Scheme Now 80% Complete

It follows the completion of a second underwater tunnel linking the sewer network from east to west.

A second underwater tunnel has been completed in a Westmeath town linking its sewer network from east to west.

It links into the massive 114 million euro investment made by Uisce Eireann to reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Athlone.

The project began on the east bank of the River Shannon at the Strand Car Park.

Expert divers and tunnelling crews used a tunnel boring machine to lower an eight metre deep shaft into gravel and rock.

It re-emerged 22 days later outside Sean's Bar on the west side.

It's part of works under the Uisce Eireann Athlone Main Drainage Scheme which began in 2023.

Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann Eunan Canavan says the works are now 80% complete and is thanking the public for their patience.

The next steps of the project involve cross connection works to link the new sewer networks to the existing ones at locations in the town over the coming works.

It will be alongside testing and comissioning of the Coosan West Pump Station and a new station in Golden Island.

When completed, the works will reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the town and address overflows into the River Shannon.
